Non-Profit Spotlight: A21 – The New Abolitionists

A tragedy and crime that has been so heavy on my heart this past year is human trafficking. This is a world-wide evil that is currently a 150 billion dollar industry, and affects individuals in every country.

A21 – The New Abolitionists:

An organization that is making real change in the lives of the enslaved and those at risk for being trafficked is A21. They call themselves The New Abolitionists, and they are fighting for freedom for every individual. If you’d like to know more about Human Trafficking, they have a page about it: A21 Human Trafficking Page.

*Everything in quotation marks comes from their website. I thought it would be better to use their words and link you to their website to learn more than to make you read about it in my words and in theirs!

Who is A21?

“We are a nonprofit organization fueled by radical hope that human beings everywhere will be rescued from bondage and completely restored. We are the abolitionists of the 21st century. We work with you to free slaves and disrupt the demand. Human trafficking is destroying lives, but freedom will have the final word.”

Their Vision:

“We believe in a world without slavery. For 10 years now, we’ve rolled up our sleeves and set our feet to action. Why? Because in a single moment a number can turn into a name, a tragedy into a victory, and a belief into an action. Freedom. That’s our goal for every human being on the planet.”

Their Mission:

“Abolish slavery everywhere, forever.”

Statistics:

“Millions of slaves.
A $150 billion industry.
1% ever rescued.

Those statistics are daunting—and they lose the human element. The heart of our organization is the one. The one woman, the one man, the one child trapped and exploited, unable to see another end to their story. But we see the one, and we fight for the one, and we sacrifice to restore the one… to give them freedom and independence and the chance at a better story.”

Their Locations:

“We operate in 14 different locations across the globe. Each office is unique in its operations. From reducing vulnerability in refugee camps to protecting and caring for survivors, our team is always at work somewhere around the world.”

See their Locations Page for more info.

Their Solutions:

“Our operational strategy, and the heart cry of our organization, is to Reach, Rescue, and Restore lives.

-Reach the vulnerable and disrupt the demand.

-Rescue victims through identification and seek justice against their captors.

-Restore survivors and equip them to live independently.”

The New Abolitionists:

This video introduces their idea that just knowing that pain and suffering exist is something that is easy to ignore, but once you put a name and a face to it, you recognize the real person going through this horrible reality, and will want to take steps to make a change for them.

Get Involved:

If you would like to learn more and/or get involved with A21 in any way, go to their Get Involved Page!

A-Teams:

One way that I have decided to get involved is by joining an A-Team! That has been a lot of my inspiration for writing and sharing this page with you. Raising awareness is the first step in fighting human trafficking.

“We are a global community of abolitionists determined to leave our mark on history. From coffee shops to campuses, places of work to places of worship, A-Teams are wherever you are; bringing their time, talent, and influence to create real change. A-Teams are an extension of A21 and the fuel behind the mission–going to unreached places with the message of freedom. We believe that with grit, tenacity, and dedication, we can abolish slavery everywhere, forever.

Our A-team members are fundraising, educating others about human trafficking, participating in Walk For Freedom, putting together local initiatives, and spreading awareness through A21’s campaigns. There are millions of slaves in the world, but together we have the power to change the statistics.”
